IP Certificate: JD Candidates have the opportunity to gain a JD Certificate in Intellectual Property Law after taking specialized courses. The program offers a patent track for JD candidates with technical backgrounds interested in patent law practice and a trademark/copyright track for JD candidates interested in trademark and copyright law. Candidates with the certificate may enhance their degree and employability.
China IP Resource Center: The John Marshall Law School has developed a strong relationship with Chinese IP professionals and offices. As China's IP laws advance, it is becoming increasingly more important for students to become familiar with Chinese law. John Marshall provides several opportunities for students including summer opportunities (China IP Summer Program) and through the Center for International Law.
Review of Intellectual Property Law: RIPL is an honors program offered to qualifying JMLS students. It is currently the 11th most-cited technology journal in the nation, and provides students the opportunity to write about intellectual property matters. Students also have the opportunity to develop skills in editing, conduct research and expand their legal writing skills.
Crowdsourcing IP Research: Patexia is a company founded on using crowdsourcing to harness and hone the skills of students, professors, practitioners, and legal experts to solve real world IP problems. - Patent and Trademark Clinics: Students are given the opportunity to practice IP law in front of the USPTO under the direction of a clinic supervisor. The Patent Clinic allows students to engage in patent prosecution with real inventors. The recently-established Trademark Clinic provides valuable experience in working with the USPTO, individuals and small businesses to understand the trademark registration process and system.
- Moot Court Competitions: JMLS hosts an incredible appellate advocacy program that provides students coaches and prepares students for moot court competitions, including the patent law-focused Giles S. Rich Moot Court Competition, the trademark law-focused Lefkowitz Trademark Moot Court Competition, and a few entertainment law competitions. The entire list of competitions is available here.
- Externships: The Center offers experiential education opportunities to IP students. Interested students should contact the Center Director, Doris Long, at [email protected]. Other student opportunities are available through the Basic Externship Program and the Career Services Office. As always, students are highly encouraged to meet with professors and practitioners to learn of more opportunities.
